By Maria Popova In 1964, more than a decade after the publication of her tender story An Invisible Flower, Yoko Ono collected a selection of her poetic meditations on life in a small but whimsical book published in Tokyo in a limited edition of 500. ![]() This invited viewers to imagine the other half and determine for themselves if the room was half empty or half full. Her work can be found in several important museum collections worldwide, including The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., among others. Yoko Ono is not only a musician, she is an accomplished (and acclaimed) artist in many different mediums. Yoko’s exhibit featured half a room filled with household objects and furniture all painted white and neatly cut in half. After the firebombing of Toyko in 1945, Yoko, her mother, and her brother and sister fled to a bunker, where they had to barter for. Born on Februin Tokyo, Japan, Ono was profoundly marked by her experience of living through WWII and moving to New York as a young woman. The war ripped apart Ono’s family and her sense of self. Her seminal performance, Cut Piece (1964), took this idea even further, putting herself at the mercy of an audience that cut her clothes off, piece by piece. In one of her earliest pieces, Painting to Be Stepped On (1960–1961), the artist invited viewers to walk on top of a canvas placed on the floor, thereby radically questioning the separation between art and life by asking viewers to participate in its completion. The edition was limited to 500 numbered, signed copies. ![]() The book was released on 4 July 1964, selling for 3 to subscribers and 6 to others. Ono moved back to Japan in 1962 and established her own imprint, Wunternaum Press, for the purpose of publishing Grapefruit. And in her 1960 instructional PEA PIECE, she planted a tactical term reclaimed as a witty agricultural pun peas in random urban spaces for. The works of John Cage and Marcel Duchamp were both highly influential to Ono’s Neo-Dada artwork, which often achieves a unique combination of humor and poignancy. Money for the project never materialized.
